British Values
At Highcliffe Primary, the values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, respect for, and tolerance of, the views and beliefs of others, are interwoven into the ethos of the school. They underpin the curriculum entitlement our children receive and are reflected in the positive relationships that we promote within, and beyond, our school community.
Democracy
Pupils are listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully, and with empathy, to each other, respecting the right of individuals to hold opinions and beliefs. Pupils have the opportunity to give opinions and to offer ideas in class discussions, and through our School Council and pupil questionnaires. The elections of the School Council and House Captains are based upon applications and pupil votes, reflecting our British electoral system and demonstrating democracy in action.
Rule of Law
The importance of laws that govern the class, the school, the local community or the country, are consistently reinforced. Our school has non-negotiable rules, based upon a set of rights and responsibilities, reflected in our Positive Behaviour Policy. Each class also discusses and sets its own rules that children “sign up to” at the start of the year. This supports children in understanding the value of, and reasons behind laws: that they govern and protect our rights; the responsibilities that this involves; and the consequences when laws are broken.
Individual Liberty
Pupils are actively encouraged to make positive choices, within a safe and supportive environment. Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms, whilst understanding their responsibility to each other. They are advised how to exercise these safely: for example in e-safety and P.S.H.E. lessons; through participation in extra-curricular activities; in homework menus.
Mutual Respect
Respect is one of the core values of our school. It is embedded in our mission statement, and all that we do. We expect children and adults to know and understand the great importance of respect being shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have, and to everything, however big or small.
Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Our core value of respect encompasses tolerance of those who have different faiths and beliefs. Beliefs, traditions and customs from other faiths and countries are celebrated in many curriculum areas: for example, RE, PSHE, History, Geography, English. Through this our pupils gain an enhanced understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society.
