Wider Curriculum Overview

At Highcliffe Primary School, we intend to deliver a curriculum that is broad, balanced and ambitious for all children.  We want our children to build knowledge and skills which will enable them to become lifelong learners with enquiring minds.  We have placed knowledge at the heart of our curriculum to help our children develop vocabulary and understanding of key concepts that will equip them for further learning and later life.  Our progressive knowledge-rich curriculum will build layers of understanding of vocabulary and concepts year on year across subjects. Following current research and thinking on the role of memory in learning, we aim to give our pupils frequent opportunities to revisit and build upon previous learning.

We have designed our curriculum around one overarching theme for each term of the school year.  These themes are:  Discovery, Global and Wellbeing. We feel that these themes will help our pupils develop as kind, enquiring and aspirational learners.

The EYFS Framework (Nursery and Reception) and The National Curriculum (Key Stages 1 and 2) provide the framework for our curriculum. In RE, we use the Redcar and Cleveland Agreed Syllabus.

The Year Group overviews set out in more detail what children from each year group will be learning about in each curriculum subject throughout the school year.
